The AKW Braddan Level Access Shower Tray: A Complete Size Guide for Specifiers and Installers

The AKW Braddan Level Access Shower Tray: A Complete Size Guide for Specifiers and Installers

Michael Porter |

When it comes to specifying level access shower trays for accessible bathrooms, care environments, and DFG-funded adaptations, the AKW Braddan range is one of the most comprehensive available. With over 25 sizes spanning square, compact rectangular, and large rectangular formats, the Braddan covers virtually every floor plan — from a tight en-suite adaptation to a purpose-built wet room in a care home. This guide walks through the full range to help you select the right size for any project.

What Makes the Braddan the Right Choice?

The Braddan is manufactured from GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) with integral reinforcement, giving it a 190.5kg (30 stone) load capacity — sufficient for shower chair users and assisted showering. At just 40mm high, it offers three installation configurations: surface mounted (40mm threshold), semi-recessed (20mm threshold), or fully recessed for a 0mm level access finish compliant with Part M and DDA requirements.

No under-tray foaming is required, which keeps installations clean and straightforward. The non-handed design means it works in any layout, tiling upstands are included as standard, and optional 20mm and 40mm ramp kits are available for surface and semi-recessed installations. Every tray is supplied with a TDTW 50 gravity waste (Code 25126) as standard, and AKW's upward discharge pumped waste is available for installations where the floor cannot be breached.

The Braddan carries a lifetime guarantee and is compatible with AKW's Standard, Silverdale, Sliding, Level Best, and Larenco screen ranges.

Square Trays

For compact wet rooms and smaller adapted bathrooms, the Braddan square range offers four sizes: 800x800mm, 820x820mm, 900x900mm, and 1000x1000mm. The 800x800mm is the smallest in the range and suits tight spaces where wall length and width are equally constrained. The 900x900mm is the most commonly specified square size, offering a practical showering area that fits comfortably in most standard bathroom footprints. The 1000x1000mm is the largest square option and is well suited to care environments where a generously proportioned showering area is required without going to a full rectangular format.

Compact Rectangular Trays

This group covers trays where one dimension is significantly shorter than the other, making them ideal for corridor-style bathrooms, galley wet rooms, and adapted en-suites where wall length is available but width is restricted. Sizes include 1000x700mm, 1000x800mm, 1100x800mm, 1200x650mm, 1200x700mm, and 1200x820mm. The 1200x700mm is a popular specification choice — long enough for a comfortable shower but narrow enough to fit in many standard en-suite layouts. The 1200x820mm offers a useful extra 120mm of depth for projects where assisted showering is likely.

Large Rectangular Trays

For larger accessible bathrooms, care home wet rooms, and purpose-built accessible properties, the Braddan's large rectangular range provides exceptional choice. Lengths run from 1300mm up to 1800mm, with depth options of 700mm, 820mm, and 900mm across the range.

The 700mm depth trays — available in 1300mm, 1420mm, 1500mm, 1600mm, 1700mm, and 1800mm lengths — are the go-to choice where wall length is generous but floor width remains limited. The 1700x700mm and 1800x700mm are particularly well suited to very tall users and specialist accessible wet rooms.

The 820mm depth trays — available in 1300mm, 1420mm, 1500mm, and 1800mm lengths — add a meaningful extra 120mm of width over the 700mm equivalent, making a significant practical difference for assisted showering and carer access.

The 900mm depth trays — available in 1200mm, 1400mm, and 1800mm lengths — offer the widest shower area in the range. The 1800x900mm is the most generously proportioned tray in the entire Braddan range and is an excellent choice for care environments where both maximum length and full width are available.

Choosing the Right Size

For most domestic adaptations, the 1200x700mm or 1200x820mm will cover the majority of projects. For care homes and larger accessible bathrooms, the 1420mm and 1500mm length trays with 820mm depth offer an excellent balance of usable space and practical floor footprint. Where the absolute maximum showering area is required and floor space allows, the 1800x820mm or 1800x900mm are the natural choice.
