Wall Hung Wash Basin

A wall hung basin fixes straight to the wall with nothing beneath it. The floor stays completely clear, which makes a small bathroom feel larger and lets you mop straight underneath.

The wall has to take it

Settle this before anything else. All the weight — basin, water, and anyone leaning on it — goes into the wall fixing. A solid masonry wall is fine. A stud wall needs noggins or a plywood backing board fitted behind the plasterboard before it is boarded and tiled. Retrofitting that means opening the wall.

Some basins are supplied with a concealed bracket or frame, which spreads the load and is worth having.

Accessible bathrooms

Wall hung basins are the standard choice for wheelchair access, because the clear space beneath lets a chair get close enough to use the basin properly. You also choose the mounting height, which can be set for the individual user rather than a standard.

The pipework shows

With nothing to hide behind, the trap and supply pipes are visible. A bottle trap in a matching finish looks far better than a standard white trap, and taking the waste back into the wall rather than down to the floor is neater again. Plan this rather than leaving it to the fitter on the day.
