A raising plinth sits under an existing toilet pan and lifts it, giving the benefit of a comfort height WC without replacing the toilet or disturbing the soil pipe.
When a plinth is the right answer
Where someone's needs have changed and a full bathroom refit is not practical or affordable. A plinth is a fraction of the cost of a new pan and installation, and it can be fitted in an afternoon.
It is also reversible, which matters in rented or adapted-for-a-period housing where the toilet may need returning to standard height later.
How much rise?
Plinths typically add 50mm or 100mm. Standard pan height is around 400mm to the seat, so 50mm brings it close to comfort height and 100mm goes above it. Higher is not automatically better — the user's feet should still reach the floor for a stable, supported posture.
Installation
The plinth raises the pan, which means the soil connection and any flush pipe must accommodate the new height. A flexible pan connector usually handles this, but check clearances before ordering.
The alternative
If you are replacing the toilet anyway, a purpose-made comfort height toilet is the tidier solution. Pair either with grab rails for support standing up.
