A cloakroom basin is a scaled-down wash basin for rooms where a full-size one simply will not fit — downstairs WCs, en-suites and under-stairs cloakrooms.
Depth matters more than width
Widths start around 350mm, but in a cloakroom the measurement that decides everything is usually projection from the wall. A standard basin comes out 400mm or more; a slimline cloakroom basin around 200-250mm. Measure from the wall to the door swing and to where someone has to stand.
Corner basins
Where even a slimline basin blocks the walkway, a corner basin uses the one part of a small room that is otherwise dead space. See our corner wash basins.
Be realistic about the trade-off
A small bowl splashes more than a large one, and a shallow basin splashes more again. That is the price of fitting a basin into a room that could not otherwise take one. Choosing the right tap helps considerably.
Taps
Use a mini basin mixer — a full-size tap on a small bowl will overshoot and put water straight onto the floor. Check the tap hole drilling before ordering.
