Wet Floor Former Wastes

Wet Floor Former Wastes

The waste is the part of a wet room installation most often specified wrong — and the most expensive to put right, because correcting it means lifting the former and re-laying the floor finish. Two things decide which one you need.

1. Tiled or vinyl?

Vinyl safety flooring needs a waste with a clamping ring, which traps the vinyl to form the seal. Tiled floors need a stainless steel waste with an adjustable top plate that rises to meet the tile, sealed by a tanking membrane. They are not interchangeable — a vinyl waste fitted under tiles will eventually leak.

2. How much depth is below the former?

Measure the clear depth in the floor void before ordering. As a guide:

  • Under 55mm — low depth wastes such as the DW90 and GW90-2, both needing only 53mm, or a pumped gulley from 35mm.
  • 90-100mm — a 19mm water seal option such as the TFWA with GW19.
  • 120mm or more — the TF75 with a 75mm seal, or a GW50 at 50mm. Use the deepest seal your floor allows; it resists odour backflow better.

Gravity or pumped?

Gravity is always preferable — no power, nothing to service, nothing to fail. Choose a pumped gulley only where you cannot achieve a fall to the soil stack, and remember it needs a fused spur wired by a qualified electrician.
