Shower Curtains

A shower curtain remains the most practical way to contain spray in an accessible bathroom. Unlike a glass screen it moves completely out of the way, which matters when a carer needs access or a wheelchair has to approach the shower.

Sizing

Curtains are specified as width x drop. The width should be around 1.5 times the rail length so the curtain gathers properly rather than pulling flat — a curtain the same width as the rail will not seal at the ends.

For a wet room floor, choose a drop that reaches close to the floor without touching it. Too long and it wicks water outward; too short and spray escapes underneath.

Weighted hems and mesh panels

A weighted hem keeps the curtain hanging straight instead of billowing inward when the shower runs. Some accessible curtains include a mesh panel so a carer can see the user without opening the curtain, which is a genuinely useful feature in assisted bathing.

Care

Most curtains are machine washable. Leaving one drawn rather than bunched after showering lets it dry properly and dramatically reduces mould at the hem.

You will need a shower curtain rail to hang it from.
