A grab rail is the simplest and most effective bathroom adaptation there is. Correctly positioned, it turns a transfer that felt precarious into one that feels secure.
Straight, angled or drop down?
- Straight rails — horizontal beside a toilet or bath, vertical beside a shower entry for pulling up. The most versatile.
- Angled rails — follow the natural arc of the hand as someone rises, useful beside a toilet or at a bath.
- Drop down rails — fold up out of the way when not needed, essential where a wheelchair transfers sideways onto a toilet.
Fixing is everything
A grab rail is only as strong as what it is screwed into. It must go into solid masonry or timber noggins — never plasterboard alone, and never plasterboard fixings. A rail that pulls out under load is more dangerous than no rail at all, because the user has already committed their weight to it.
If the wall construction is uncertain, get it checked before fitting. Tiles hide what is behind them.
Colour contrast
Rails that contrast visually with the wall are far easier to locate for users with reduced vision or dementia. Blue and red rails are the standard choice, and this is a requirement under Part M in commercial settings.
Positioning
Height and placement depend on the individual — an occupational therapist assessment is worth having for a specific user. Call 0333 772 4162 if you need help specifying.
