Toilet Roll Holders

A small fitting, but one used several times a day — and one that is genuinely annoying when it is in the wrong place.

Positioning

The usual guidance is around 200-300mm forward of the pan front and 600-700mm from the floor, on the side of the dominant hand where there is a choice. Too far back and it is an awkward reach; too low and it catches a knee.

In an accessible bathroom, position it within easy reach of a seated user without requiring a twist — and clear of any grab rail so the two do not conflict.

Types

• Open arm — quickest to change a roll one-handed.
• Covered — keeps the roll dry, worth having in a wet room or a small shower room.
• Freestanding — no drilling, useful in rented property, and often holds spare rolls.

Fixing

Into tile, use a proper tile bit without hammer action. A holder that pulls out takes the tile face with it.

Finish

Match your other accessories — holder, towel rail and robe hook in the same finish look considered rather than accumulated.
