Semi Pedestal Wash Basin

A semi pedestal basin hangs on the wall with a shroud covering the trap and pipework, stopping short of the floor. It is the middle ground between a full pedestal and a fully wall hung basin.

The advantage

You get the tidy look of concealed pipework and a clear floor to mop under — the two things a full pedestal and a bare wall hung basin each give up. In a small bathroom the visible floor also makes the room feel larger.

The catch

All the weight goes into the wall. The semi pedestal is a cosmetic shroud, not a support, so it carries nothing. A solid masonry wall is fine; a stud wall needs noggins or a backing board fitted before the plasterboard goes up. Establish this before you buy.

Height

Because there is no floor support, you set the mounting height. Around 800-850mm to the rim suits most adults, and you can adjust for a taller household or for wheelchair access.

Tap holes

Check the drilling — one hole for a mono mixer, two for separate pillar taps. It cannot be changed later.
