DOC M Packs

A Doc M pack is a complete set of accessible sanitaryware supplied together to meet Part M of the Building Regulations — the requirement covering access to and use of buildings. Buying it as a pack means the components are the right specification and the right dimensions relative to each other.

What is in a pack

Typically a comfort height WC pan and cistern, a wash basin, a set of grab rails including a hinged support arm, a back rest, a toilet seat and often a mirror and dispensers. Exact contents vary, so check the specification against your drawings.

Left or right hand

Doc M layouts are handed, dictated by the transfer space beside the toilet. Establish from the floor plan which side a wheelchair user approaches from — this is set by the room layout, not by preference, and getting it wrong means the installation does not comply.

Colour contrast

Part M requires rails and fittings to contrast visually with the wall behind, which is why packs are commonly supplied in blue. White packs suit settings where the walls themselves are dark. This is an accessibility requirement for visually impaired users, not a styling choice.

Where they are needed

Commercial premises, public buildings, schools, and new-build or substantially altered dwellings. For domestic adaptations that do not need formal compliance, individual grab rails and a comfort height toilet may be more appropriate.
