The push button sits on the cistern lid and operates the flush valve beneath. It is one of the few toilet parts that genuinely wears out, and replacing one is far cheaper than replacing a cistern.
Identifying a replacement
Buttons are matched to the flush valve, not to the toilet. Before ordering, lift the cistern lid and check:
- the diameter of the hole in the lid the button passes through
- the thread size on the collar beneath
- whether it is dual flush (two buttons) or single
- any make or model marking on the flush valve itself
Where the original is discontinued, replacing the whole flush valve with a matched button is often more reliable than hunting for a button alone.
Common faults
A button that sticks down or fails to return is usually the valve rather than the button. A button that feels loose has generally just worked its collar loose and can be hand-tightened.
Finishes
Chrome and white are standard. Match to the seat and any exposed fittings.
For concealed cisterns you need a flush plate instead.
