Flush Plates

A flush plate is the visible control for a concealed cistern — the only part of the mechanism on show once the wall is boarded and tiled. It is a small component that has a disproportionate effect on how the finished bathroom looks.

Match the plate to the cistern

This is the critical point. Flush plates are not universal — each manufacturer's plate fits their own cistern and frame. A Geberit plate will not fit a Kartell cistern. If you are replacing a broken plate, identify the cistern make first, usually stamped inside the access aperture.

Dual flush

Nearly all modern plates are dual flush, with a large button for a full flush and a smaller one for a reduced flush. On a metered supply the saving over a year is worth having.

Finishes

Chrome remains standard. Matt black and brushed brass suit contemporary schemes and coordinate with brassware in the same finish. White plates disappear against a white wall, which is often what you want in a small room.

Access matters

The plate is also the service hatch. Make sure yours can be removed without damage — the cistern valve behind it will need attention eventually, and a plate that only comes off by force is a problem stored up for later.
