A freestanding bath sits away from the walls as a centrepiece rather than fitting into an alcove. It is the most striking thing you can put in a bathroom, and the most demanding of space.
Space you actually need
Be realistic here. A freestanding bath needs clearance on all sides — around 100mm minimum behind for cleaning, and comfortable walking room at the ends. A 1700mm bath in a 2000mm room technically fits but will feel cramped and be awkward to clean around.
Taps and plumbing
This is what people underestimate. Most freestanding baths have no tap holes, so you need either floor standing taps or wall mounted ones — and the pipework has to come up through the floor in exactly the right position. That must be planned before the floor goes down. Retrofitting is a serious job.
Weight
Acrylic is manageable. A stone resin or cast iron bath full of water plus a bather is a substantial point load, and on a timber first floor the joists may need checking. Worth establishing early rather than on delivery day.
Styles
Roll top and slipper baths suit period properties; smooth-sided contemporary designs suit modern rooms. Both need the same clearances.
Short on space? A single ended bath uses the room far more efficiently.
