Wall Mounted Vanity Units

A wall hung vanity unit fixes to the wall with clear floor beneath it. That does two useful things: it makes a small bathroom look considerably larger, and it lets you mop straight under the unit rather than around a plinth.

Will your wall take it?

This is the question to settle first. A wall hung unit plus a ceramic basin plus water is a real load, concentrated on two brackets. A solid masonry wall is fine. A stud wall needs noggins or a plywood backing board behind the plasterboard, fitted before the boards go up. Retrofitting that means opening the wall.

Choosing a width and height

Widths run from 400mm for a cloakroom to 1200mm for a double basin, with 600mm and 800mm the most common. Because the unit is not floor-fixed you also choose the mounting height — around 800-850mm to the top of the basin suits most adults, and you can go lower for a family bathroom or wheelchair user.

Pipework

All the plumbing shows beneath a wall hung unit unless you plan for it. Bottle traps in a matching finish look far better than a standard white trap, and running the waste back into the wall rather than the floor is neater again.
