Wall Hung Toilets

Wall Hung Toilets

A wall hung toilet fixes to a concealed frame inside the wall, so nothing touches the floor. It is the easiest toilet to clean around and the most space-efficient, which is why it has become the default in contemporary bathrooms.

You need a frame

This is the part people underestimate. A wall hung pan cannot fix to plasterboard — it needs a supporting frame bolted to the floor and wall, which then gets boarded and tiled over. The frame houses the cistern and takes the full load of pan and user.

That means building out the wall by around 200mm, so you lose some floor depth in exchange for the visual space you gain. In a small cloakroom, do the sums before committing.

Plan before you tile

Frame, cistern and pipework all go in before boarding. Retrofitting a wall hung toilet into a finished bathroom means taking the wall apart — if that is not practical, a back to wall toilet gives a similar look with far less work.

Setting the height

Because the pan is not floor-fixed, you choose the height. Standard is around 400mm to the seat; raising it to 450mm gives comfort height, which is easier for taller or less mobile users.

Access

Make sure the flush plate can be removed to reach the cistern valve for servicing.
