Mixer Care Showers

A mixer care shower blends stored hot and cold water, rather than heating it on demand like an electric care shower. Where you have a good hot water supply, it gives a stronger and more consistent flow.

What makes it a care shower

• Large, easy-grip controls — operable with limited dexterity or while seated.
• Thermostatic control with safety cut-out — holds temperature when water is drawn elsewhere and shuts off if the cold supply fails. Non-negotiable where a user cannot move quickly or has reduced sensation.
• Clear tactile markings — helpful for users with visual impairment or dementia.
• Low-level control positioning — within reach of someone using a shower seat.

Mixer or electric?

A mixer gives better flow and is cheaper to run, but depends on your hot water cylinder — if it runs out, the shower runs cold. An electric shower heats on demand and never runs out, but delivers less flow. In a care home with sequential showering, electric is often the safer specification.

Water pressure

Mixer showers need adequate pressure to perform. On a gravity-fed system check the minimum requirement, and consider a pump if it falls short.
