Basin Wastes

Basin wastes look interchangeable and are not. Fitting the wrong type is one of the most common ordering mistakes in a bathroom.

Slotted or unslotted?

This is the one that matters. Look at your basin: if there is a small overflow hole near the top of the bowl, you need a slotted waste — the slot lets overflow water pass through into the drain. If there is no overflow hole, you need an unslotted waste.

Fit an unslotted waste to a basin with an overflow and the overflow cannot drain. Fit a slotted waste to a basin without one and it will leak from the slot.

Types

• Click clack — press to open, press to close. The most popular, with no visible lever.
• Pop-up — operated by a rod behind the tap. Traditional, and needs a tap designed to take it.
• Free flowing — permanently open, used where the basin never needs filling.

Finish

Match the waste to the tap. A chrome waste in a matt black basin under a matt black tap is immediately noticeable.
