An electric shower heats water on demand from the cold mains, so it works whatever the state of your hot water cylinder and never runs out. That independence is why they suit second bathrooms, en-suites and households where several people shower in succession.
Choosing a kW rating
Higher kW means a stronger flow, not a hotter shower — the unit heats water as it passes, so more power heats more water per second.
- 8.5kW — entry level, noticeably weaker in winter when incoming mains water is colder.
- 9.5kW — the sensible middle ground and the most common choice.
- 10.5kW and above — the strongest flow, but needs a heavier supply cable and adequate capacity at the consumer unit.
Do not simply buy the highest rating. Your existing cable and fuse may not support an upgrade, and an electrician must confirm before you order.
Thermostatic models
A thermostatic electric shower holds temperature when water is drawn elsewhere in the house and cuts out if the supply fails. Strongly recommended for families and essential in accessible settings — see our electric care showers.
Installation
Electric showers need both a dedicated electrical circuit with a pull cord isolator and a cold mains feed. Fitting is a job for a qualified electrician and, usually, a plumber.
