A shower seat turns showering from something that has to be endured standing into something that can be done safely and comfortably sitting down. They are among the most effective and least expensive adaptations you can make to a bathroom.
Fold up or fixed?
Fold up seats lift flush against the wall when not in use, so the shower stays usable by everyone in the household. This is the right choice in a shared family bathroom. Fixed and freestanding seats suit dedicated accessible bathrooms and care settings where the seat is always needed.
With or without legs?
Wall mounted seats without legs give clear floor space beneath, making them easier to clean around and better for wheelchair transfers. Seats with support legs carry a higher load and are the safer specification for heavier users or where the wall construction is uncertain. Always check the stated load rating against the user's weight.
Padded or unpadded?
Padded seats are warmer and more comfortable for longer showers or where a user sits for assisted washing. Unpadded moulded seats are quicker to clean and dry, which matters in a care home or clinical setting.
Specifying safely
Fixings must go into solid backing — a stud wall needs noggins or a backing board behind the plasterboard. Pair seats with grab rails for transfers, and consider colour contrast against the wall for users with visual impairment or dementia.
