Wall panels are a waterproof alternative to tiling — large sheets that join with a tongue and groove or trim, leaving no grout lines at all. For most people that last point is the whole appeal.
Why panels over tiles
- No grout — nothing to discolour, crack or scrub. This is the single biggest practical advantage.
- Fast to fit — a shower enclosure can be panelled in a day rather than several.
- Fit over existing tiles in many cases, avoiding the mess of stripping them out.
- Fully waterproof in themselves, unlike tile and grout which relies on the substrate behind.
Measuring and cutting
Panels are typically 1000mm or 1200mm wide and 2400mm high. Plan the layout so joints fall sensibly rather than at an awkward corner, and account for cut-outs around the shower valve and any fittings — those cuts must be sealed properly or the benefit is lost.
Trims and adhesive
Panels need matching internal corner, external corner and end-cap trims, plus the correct adhesive and sealant. These are not optional extras. See our wall panel accessories.
Finishes
Marble and stone effects are the most popular, giving the look of large-format tiling without the joints. Gloss and plain finishes suit a more contemporary room.
