The Carron Halcyon D-shape is a back-to-wall bath – straight along the wall, with a sweeping curved front that gives the look of a freestanding bath without needing space all the way round it. At 1750 x 800mm and 602mm tall it stands taller than a standard bath, which is what gives it that deep, sculpted profile.

It is a double ended bath – the waste sits centrally and there are no tap holes, so it is designed for wall-mounted or floor-standing taps and you can lie at either end. Capacity is 253 litres. It comes in Carron's standard 5mm acrylic with a 30-year warranty or Carronite with a 40-year warranty, and is made in Britain by Carron, whose manufacturing history goes back to 1759.

5mm acrylic or Carronite?

Worth thinking about on a bath like this. A D-shape is bought to be looked at, and its curved front is the most visible surface in the room. Carronite's extra rigidity means less flex in that front as the bath fills and empties, which is where a soft acrylic shell tends to show its age.

The panel

The Halcyon D takes its own wraparound front panel (02436), moulded to follow the full curve of the bath. There is only one panel, and it suits either finish – there is no separate standard and Carronite version as there is elsewhere in the Carron range. It is sold separately and the bath needs it, since the curved front is exposed on all visible sides.

Before you order

• The bath has no tap holes. You will need wall-mounted or floor-standing taps, and the plumbing for them has to be planned before the wall is finished.
• Remember the height. At 602mm it is around 60mm taller than a standard bath, which affects how easy it is to climb into and where a wall-mounted filler needs to sit.
• Budget for the panel. It is a large moulded wraparound rather than a flat sheet, and it is priced accordingly – worth factoring in from the start.
• Check the route in. At 1742mm long, 792mm wide and 602mm tall this is a bulky item – measure doorways, landings and any turn on the stairs before delivery day.
• Taps, waste and panel are sold separately.
• Think about the floor. Full to capacity it holds 253kg of water before anyone gets in.

Fitting tips

Install the bath with Carron's installation kit, levelled carefully – on a D-shape any lean shows immediately along the straight back edge against the wall. Fill the bath with water before running the silicone seal, so the joint cures with the bath at its heaviest. Fit the panel so it can be removed again: with no side access, it is the only way back to the waste and trap.
