The Kruze is the square-sided freestanding bath in Kartell's range – crisp vertical sides, sharp corners and a thin flat rim, with the sides tapering very slightly inward towards the floor. Where the Coast is soft and oval, the Kruze is deliberately architectural, and it suits a room with straight lines and hard edges elsewhere.

Specification

Note the weight. At 70kg empty the Kruze is appreciably heavier than the Coast, which is 50kg in the same length – the square shape uses more material. Worth knowing for both the delivery and the two people who will be carrying it.

Taps and waste

A freestanding bath has no tap holes, so it needs either a floor-standing bath shower mixer or wall-mounted taps. Plan the plumbing before the floor goes down – a floor-standing mixer needs its feed brought up through the floor in exactly the right spot, and that is very difficult to change afterwards.

The waste is visible on a freestanding bath, so it is worth choosing. Kartell offer a matching click clack waste in brushed brass or black if you would rather it picked up your brassware than disappeared into chrome.

Before you order

• Leave room to clean round it. A freestanding bath needs a gap on every side – push it against a wall and you lose the whole point of it, and you cannot reach behind to clean.
• Plan the plumbing first. Feeds and waste come up through the floor, so their positions have to be set before the bath arrives.
• Think about the floor. 70kg empty, and several hundred kilos full and occupied, concentrated in the middle of a room rather than against a supporting wall.
• Check the route in. Freestanding baths are bulky and rigid – measure doorways, landings and any turn on the stairs before delivery day.
• Taps and waste are sold separately.

Fitting tips

Set the bath out on the floor and mark the waste position before committing to anything. Level it carefully – on a square bath any lean shows immediately along the top rim against the wall behind. Once the waste is connected, check for leaks before the bath is finally positioned, because access underneath is limited once it is down.
