Kartell K-VIT Flair Hi-Rise Mono Basin Mixer – Chrome (TAP005FLJ)
The Kartell K-VIT Flair range is built around one idea: a square-set chrome body with a wide, open curved spout, so the water arrives as a broad flat sheet rather than a round jet. Kartell describe it as a collection that "gives a totally chic finishing touch to a trendy interior", and the open spout is what people notice — it is the whole point of the design.
This is the hi-rise mono basin mixer — the same open spout on a tall column, with the outlet raised well clear of the basin.
When you need a hi-rise
A standard basin mixer sits low, which is fine for a basin with the tap hole in the rim. But if you have a countertop or vessel basin — a bowl sitting on top of a worktop or vanity unit — a standard tap will be too short, and the spout will sit at or below the rim of the bowl.
A hi-rise gives you the height to get your hands underneath comfortably. Measure the height of your bowl from the worktop before choosing, and check the spout will reach far enough over to land water near the middle of the bowl rather than the edge. A taller spout also means a longer drop, so splashing is more likely with a shallow bowl — and more so again with an open spout like this one, which spreads the water out as it falls.
Water pressure
Kartell rate this tap for pressures between 0.5 and 10 bar. That covers mains, combi and unvented systems comfortably. A gravity-fed tank and cylinder can reach 0.5 bar where there is enough height between the cold tank and the tap, but in a bungalow, or where the tank sits close above the bathroom, it often will not — worth checking before you order, or fitting a pump.
Living with it
The ceramic disc cartridge with quarter-turn operation gives full flow from a small movement of the lever, and is far less prone to dripping than a washer tap.
Chrome is the easiest finish to live with and the easiest to spoil. A wipe with a soft damp cloth is all it needs, though it shows water spots and fingerprints more readily than a brushed finish, so in a hard water area it pays to dry it off. What it will not tolerate is abrasives: cream cleaners, scouring pads and strong limescale removers cut through the plating, and once chrome has gone dull and cloudy it cannot be brought back.
If your basin has a rim tap hole rather than being a countertop bowl, the standard Flair mono basin mixer is the one you want — and unlike this one it includes a matching click waste.
The rest of the Flair range
The range also includes a mono basin mixer with click waste, a wall mounted basin mixer, a mono bidet mixer, a bath filler, a bath shower mixer, a 4 hole bath shower mixer and a freestanding bath shower mixer.
