A full pedestal basin stands on a column that reaches the floor, hiding the trap and pipework completely. It remains the most straightforward basin to fit and the easiest to make look tidy.
Why full pedestal?
The pedestal takes some of the basin's weight, so the wall fixing is less critical than with a wall hung basin — useful in older properties or on stud walls. It also conceals waste and supply pipes without any planning, which is why it is still the default in replacement bathrooms.
The trade-off is the floor: you have to clean around the column, and it fixes the basin height.
Tap holes
Check the drilling before ordering. One hole takes a mono mixer; two holes take separate pillar taps. The holes are moulded in, so you cannot change your mind later.
Sizing
Widths typically run from 450mm for a cloakroom to 700mm for a family bathroom. Pedestals are matched to their basin — they are not interchangeable between models, so buy them as a pair.
