Malibu is a designer towel rail from Kartell in a warm brushed brass finish. Instead of round tubes, it has twelve wide, flat bars arranged in groups of three, four and five, with two open gaps between the groups where folded towels can hang and dry. It is made from mild steel with a brushed brass plated finish, and plumbs into your central heating like any other towel radiator.

Brushed brass pairs well with brass or gold-toned taps, wastes and mirror frames, and gives a softer, warmer look than chrome.

Size and heat output

Is it the right size for your room?

At 1200mm tall and 500mm wide, Malibu suits most family bathrooms and en-suites. If it will be the only heat in the room, check its output against what the room needs – a BTU calculator will give you a figure from the room's size, windows and outside walls. A towel rail covered in damp towels gives off less heat into the room, so it is worth allowing some margin.

Kartell quote the output at Δt60, a standard test temperature. Many modern boilers, and especially heat pumps, run cooler than that, so the heat you actually get may be lower than the figure shown.

Fitting

Malibu is supplied with everything needed to fix it to the wall. Valves are sold separately – brass-finish valves will keep the look consistent; see our towel radiator valves collection.

The pipe connections are at the bottom of each upright, 450mm apart (the “tapping centres”). Check this against your existing pipework before you buy – if you are replacing an old towel rail with different centres, the pipes will need moving. The brackets are adjustable: the rail stands 100–105mm out from the wall, with the pipe connections 62–67mm out from the wall. Make sure the wall can carry the weight once the rail is full of water and towels: solid walls are straightforward, but stud and plasterboard walls need suitable heavy-duty fixings or a timber support behind the board.

Looking after the finish

Wipe over with a soft, damp cloth and dry. Avoid abrasive pads, bleach, limescale removers and strong bathroom cleaners, which can damage a plated brass finish.
