Kartell K-VIT Memphis Towel Rail – Matt Black (All Sizes)

Memphis is a designer towel rail from Kartell with wide, flat bars on two slim round uprights, giving a clean, panel-like look. The bars are set in groups with open gaps between them where folded towels can hang – eight bars in three groups on the 800mm size, and twelve in four groups on the 1200mm sizes. This is the matt black version; Memphis also comes in Chrome.

The matt black finish gives a bold, modern look that pairs well with black taps and showers, and hides water marks better than a gloss finish.

It comes in three sizes: 800 x 500mm, 1200 x 500mm and 1200 x 600mm. Choose your size from the dropdown.

Sizes and heat output

Choosing a size

The 800mm suits a cloakroom, en-suite or a shorter wall; the 1200mm heights give more hanging space and much more heat. Kartell's figures show the 1200 x 500mm (2474 BTU) giving slightly more heat than the wider 1200 x 600mm (2388 BTU), so pick the 600mm width for towel space rather than extra warmth.

If the towel rail will be the only heat in the room, check its output against what the room needs – a BTU calculator will give you a figure from the room's size, windows and outside walls. Kartell quote the output at Δt60, a standard test temperature. Many modern boilers, and especially heat pumps, run cooler than that, so the heat you actually get may be lower than the figure shown.

Fitting

Memphis is supplied with everything needed to fix it to the wall, and is pressure tested to 10 bar. Valves are sold separately – black valves will match; see our towel radiator valves.

The pipe connections are at the bottom of each upright: 450mm apart on the 500mm-wide sizes and 550mm apart on the 600mm-wide size (the “tapping centres”). If you are replacing an existing towel rail, measure between your pipes first – if the spacing does not match, the pipework will need adjusting.

On the 500mm-wide sizes the rail stands 98–108mm out from the wall at 800mm high and 96–106mm at 1200mm high, with the pipe connections about 62mm out from the wall. Make sure the wall can take the weight once the rail is full of water and towels: solid walls are straightforward, but stud and plasterboard walls need suitable heavy-duty fixings or a timber support behind the board.

Looking after the finish

Wipe over with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, bleach and strong bathroom cleaners, which can dull or mark a matt finish.
