The border strip for the mint green Victorian floor. It is a run of small matt porcelain pieces on a mesh backing, laid as one unit, with an effective size of 285x93mm once a 2 to 3mm joint is allowed; the overall length to the tip of the end square is 310mm.

A border is what turns a sheet of pattern into a proper period floor. Run it around the edge of the room, or around a central panel in a large hallway, with the matching corner piece at each turn. It also edges a doormat well or a threshold neatly.

Working out how many boxes

Measure the length of the run in metres, add a little for cuts, divide by 2.0 and round up to the next whole box. Buy all your boxes together so the pieces come from the same batch.

Fitting notes

Lay each strip as a single mesh-backed unit. Set out the border line first, then cut the field sheets to meet it rather than the other way round. Use a flexible floor adhesive with a fine trowel, keep the joint to the field the same as the internal joints, and use the corner piece at each change of direction.
