Description

AKW 1000 Series Mild Steel Flat End Grab Rail White – Choice of Length

The AKW 1000 Series mild steel flat end grab rail is a simple, dependable white grab rail for bathrooms, toilets, hallways and doorways. It is a 25mm diameter tubular rail with flat ends, finished in a white polyester epoxy powder coating applied over a rust-inhibiting treatment, so it stays clean and bright in everyday use. Choose from three lengths – 305mm, 445mm or 600mm – to give support exactly where it is needed: beside the toilet, next to the bath, inside a shower area or by a step.

Because it is a budget-friendly, no-fuss design, the 1000 Series is a popular choice for adaptation work, housing association and local authority schemes, and for anyone who needs a few extra handholds around the home without a big outlay.

Key features & benefits

  • Mild steel tube, 25mm diameter – a comfortable size for most hands
  • White polyester epoxy powder coating over a rust-inhibitor treatment
  • Salt-spray tested to ASTM B117-87 for 96 hours
  • 43mm clearance between the rail and the wall, room for knuckles and a secure grip
  • Flat ends with two fixing holes at each end
  • Three lengths: 305mm, 445mm and 600mm

Choosing the right length

305mm rails suit tight spots such as beside a basin or a door frame. 445mm is a good all-round length for beside a toilet or bath. 600mm gives a longer handhold for stepping in and out of a shower or bath, and can be fitted horizontally, vertically or at an angle. Many people fit two rails – one vertical for pulling up and one horizontal for steadying.

Where extra visibility is needed, a colour-contrasting rail can be easier to see against a white wall – take a look at the AKW 1400 Series and 1600 Series plastic rails, which are available in blue.

Installation notes

A grab rail is only as strong as the wall it is fixed to. Always use fixings suited to the wall type (solid masonry, timber stud or plasterboard with noggins or a pattress board) and fit the rail with every fixing point used. Wall fixings are not normally supplied, because the right fixing depends on your wall. Check for hidden pipes and cables before drilling. Where a rail is being fitted for a specific person, an occupational therapist can advise on the best height and position.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this rail in a shower?

It is powder coated over a rust inhibitor and salt-spray tested, so it is suitable for bathrooms. For areas that are constantly wet, a stainless steel or plastic-covered rail is the more durable choice.

Are screws included?

Wall fixings are not supplied, because the correct fixing depends on whether your wall is masonry, timber or plasterboard.

Which length should I choose beside a toilet?

A 445mm or 600mm rail is the usual choice beside a toilet. If you are unsure, call us on 0333 772 4162.

Is the rail white?

Yes – all three lengths are finished in white.
