Description

AKW 1900 Series Heavy Duty Fluted Grab Rail – Straight or Angled, White or Blue

The AKW 1900 Series heavy duty fluted grab rail is the strongest of AKW's plastic grab rail ranges. An extruded uPVC outer with a fluted grip surface is reinforced by an aluminium tubular core, giving a maximum load of 190kg (30 stone) – a good choice for heavier users, busy care settings and anywhere a rail needs to take real weight. It is tested to BS EN 12182:1999 and needs no electrical earthing.

Straight rails are available in seven lengths from 300mm (12") to 1067mm (42"), plus a 455mm 135° angled rail and a 610mm 90° angled rail. Choose white or blue (the 90° angled rail is white only) – blue gives strong contrast against a light wall.

Key features & benefits

  • Heavy duty – maximum load 190kg / 30 stone
  • Aluminium tubular core for added strength
  • Fluted uPVC surface for extra grip
  • 32mm diameter
  • 38mm rail-to-wall clearance
  • Five fixing points
  • Tested to BS EN 12182:1999
  • No electrical earthing required
  • Seven straight lengths plus 90° and 135° angled rails
  • White or blue

Choosing your rail

Short rails (300mm–450mm) work well as vertical pull-up rails by a door, toilet or shower entrance. Mid lengths (610mm–810mm) suit a bath side or beside a toilet, and the long 914mm and 1067mm rails give a continuous handhold along a corridor, bath or shower wall. The 135° angled rail follows the arm's natural movement when rising; the 90° angled rail gives a horizontal and vertical grip in one.

Installation notes

A grab rail is only as strong as the wall it is fixed to. Always use fixings suited to the wall type (solid masonry, timber stud or plasterboard with noggins or a pattress board) and fit the rail with every fixing point used. Wall fixings are not normally supplied, because the right fixing depends on your wall. Check for hidden pipes and cables before drilling. Where a rail is being fitted for a specific person, an occupational therapist can advise on the best height and position.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is the 1900 Series?

It is tested to a maximum load of 190kg (30 stone) – compared with 100kg for the 1400 Series and 125kg for the 1600 Series.

Is it suitable for heavier users?

Its 190kg rating makes it a common choice for heavier users, provided it is fixed into a suitably strong wall with every fixing point used.

No – the rail is plastic covered and needs no earth bonding.

Is the 90° angled rail available in blue?

We list the 90° angled rail in white only.
