AKW 4000 Series Fold Up Shower Seat – Choice of Width, Style & Padding

AKW 4000 Series Fold Up Shower Seat – Choice of Width, Style & Padding

The AKW 4000 Series fold up shower seat is AKW's heavy-duty wall-mounted shower seat for care homes, hospitals, adapted homes and busy accessible shower rooms. Every seat has a rust-proof stainless steel frame, a front support leg and a safe working load of 40 stone (254kg) – or 50 stone (317.5kg) for the Large Extra Wide seat – and folds neatly up against the wall when it is not in use, leaving the shower clear for other users.

This page brings the whole 4000 Series together. Choose the seat width (Standard, Extra Wide or Large Extra Wide), the seat style (rectangular or horseshoe, with or without a back and folding arms) and the padding – no cushion, or soft-feel grey or blue cushions. Grey and blue are chosen to stand out against white walls and sanitaryware, making the seat easy to find and use.

How to choose the right 4000 Series seat

Width. The Standard seat suits most users and most shower areas. Extra Wide gives more room to sit and shuffle across, and the Large Extra Wide rectangular seat is the choice for bariatric users or anyone who needs the highest load rating.

Seat style. A plain rectangular seat is the simplest and easiest to clean. The horseshoe seat has a cut-away front so the user or a carer can wash without the user having to stand. Choose a seat with back and arms for anyone who needs support to sit upright or something to push up from – the arms fold up independently so a carer can still get close, or the user can transfer from the side.

Padding. "No cushion" models have a moulded seat and are the most hygienic choice where seats are shared. Cushioned models are warmer and more comfortable for longer showers. On back-and-arms models you can choose bare seats with coloured arms, or matching grey or blue arms and cushions.

Replacement cushions are available separately – see our AKW 4000 Series spare cushions.

Installation notes

A wall-mounted shower seat is only as safe as the wall it is fixed to. Fit it to a solid masonry wall, or to a stud wall that has been properly reinforced with a pattress board or noggins, using fixings suited to the wall and the load. Wall fixings are not normally supplied, because the correct fixing depends on your wall. Check for hidden pipes and cables before drilling, and follow AKW's fitting instructions. Where the seat is being fitted for a specific person, an occupational therapist can advise on the best seat height and position.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Standard and Extra Wide?

The Extra Wide seats give a broader seat (and back, on back-and-arms models) for extra comfort and room to transfer. Both carry the same 40st rating; the Large Extra Wide rectangular seat is rated to 50st.

Why choose a horseshoe seat?

The open front lets the user wash, or be helped to wash, without standing up – useful for seated showering and assisted washing.

Can I add cushions later?

Yes – grey and blue seat and back cushions are sold separately as spares and simply locate on the seat.

Does the seat need a solid wall?

Yes. Fix it to solid masonry or a properly reinforced stud wall using fixings suited to the wall; the support leg takes part of the load to the floor.

Is the seat suitable for a wet room with a sloping floor?

Yes – the support leg has ±13mm of fine adjustment to keep the seat level on a gradient.
