A wet room is only as watertight as its weakest joint. Liquid tanking membranes such as Mapegum WPS form a great seamless coat over flat surfaces, but the places where walls meet the floor, where boards butt together, where pipes come through and where the waste sits all move slightly and need reinforcing. Mapei Mapeband is the flexible tape and pre-formed pieces made for exactly those points.

This listing brings together all the Mapeband parts AKW supply for their Level Best wet room system, so you can buy the exact pieces you need: 120mm wide tape by the roll, pre-formed internal and external corners, a 400 x 400mm gasket for the waste outlet and 100 x 100mm gaskets for pipe inlets.

Each part is bedded into the first coat of liquid membrane and then covered by the second coat, giving a continuous, flexible seal across joints that would otherwise crack. They suit floors built on an AKW Tuff Form, Tuff Form8 or Contour ShowerDec wet floor former as well as screeded and boarded walls.

Which Mapeband parts do I need?

Work round the room and count the joints. Measure the total length of every wall-to-floor joint, internal wall corner and board joint, then add 10% for overlaps – that is how much tape you need. The 10m roll (LB00118) suits most domestic wet rooms; the 5m PE120 roll (21322) is handy for small rooms or topping up.

Count the inside corners where two walls meet the floor (most rooms have four) and choose internal corners, sold in pairs. Boxed-in pipework, window reveals and nibs create outside corners – use external corners for those. Every wet floor needs one waste outlet gasket, and every pipe or valve that comes through a tanked wall needs a pipe inlet gasket (supplied in pairs).

Installation notes

Apply the first coat of liquid membrane, press the tape or pre-formed piece into it while it is still wet, smoothing out air bubbles, then overcoat with the second layer. Overlap tape joints by at least 50mm. Cut the centre of the waste and pipe gaskets to suit the outlet or pipe diameter before bedding.

Can I use Mapeband with a different liquid membrane?

Mapeband is designed for Mapei waterproofing systems such as Mapegum WPS and Mapelastic AquaDefense. Mixing brands may affect the manufacturer guarantee.

How many corners does a typical wet room need?

Most rectangular rooms need four internal corners. Add external corners for boxing, nibs or window reveals.

Do I need a gasket for every pipe?

Yes – each pipe or valve body that passes through the tanked area should have its own pipe inlet gasket.

Which roll should I choose?

The 10m roll is the better buy for a full room; the 5m roll suits small areas or repairs.
