AKW Level Best Mapei Mapegum WPS Liquid Tanking Membrane – Choice of 5kg, 10kg or 20kg Drum
Mapei Mapegum WPS is the ready-to-use liquid tanking membrane that AKW supply as part of their Level Best wet room system. It is a single-component, solvent-free waterproofing coating that you roll, brush or trowel straight on to the floor and walls of a wet room or shower area, forming a flexible, seamless barrier under the tiles.
Because it comes ready mixed in a drum there is nothing to measure or add, and the light blue colour makes it easy to see where you have already coated. This listing lets you choose the drum size that suits your project, from a 5kg drum for a small top-up or shower enclosure, up to a 20kg drum for larger wet rooms or several jobs.
Mapegum WPS is the same membrane used in AKW and Mapei wet room tanking kits, so it is the natural choice for topping up a kit or tanking a room that is bigger than a standard kit covers. Use it with an AKW Tuff Form, Tuff Form8 or Contour ShowerDec wet floor former and Mapeband tape at every joint and corner.
Key features & benefits
- Ready to use, single-component liquid membrane – no mixing
- Solvent free, for use indoors in wet rooms and showers
- Light blue colour so you can see coverage at a glance
- Apply by trowel, brush or roller
- Skin forms in about 1 hour; second coat after 1–2 hours
- Tile over after 12–24 hours
- Covers around 5m² per 10kg at the recommended thickness
- Three drum sizes: 5kg, 10kg and 20kg
How much Mapegum WPS do I need?
Mapei state a consumption of 1.5kg per m² for every 1mm of thickness, and AKW base their kits on a 10kg drum covering about 5m² of floor or wall. As a rule of thumb, a 5kg drum covers roughly 2.5m², a 10kg drum roughly 5m² and a 20kg drum roughly 10m².
Measure the floor area of the wet room and add the wall area you intend to tank – usually the full height of the walls inside the showering zone and at least the bottom 100mm to 150mm of the other walls. Add around 10% for rough or porous surfaces. If your total is between two drum sizes, choose the larger one: it is cheaper per kilo and you will not run short half way through a coat.
If you are starting from scratch you may prefer a complete kit with tape and primer included, such as the Mapei Wet Room Tanking Kit (LB00113) or the AKW FormSafe Tanking Kit. Buy the drums here when you need extra membrane or are tanking a large room.
Installation notes
Surfaces must be clean, dry, sound and free from dust. Prime absorbent surfaces first (see Mapei Primer G). Bed Mapeband tape, corners and gaskets into the first coat at every wall-to-floor joint, board joint, corner, pipe and waste outlet, then apply a second full coat once the first is touch dry. Allow 12–24 hours before tiling. Store drums frost free.

Frequently asked questions
Can I tile directly on to Mapegum WPS?
Yes. Once it has cured (allow 12–24 hours) you can tile on to it with a suitable cement-based tile adhesive.
Do I need to use tape as well?
Yes. The membrane alone does not bridge moving joints. Use Mapeband tape at wall-to-floor joints and board joints, and Mapeband corners and gaskets at corners, pipes and the waste outlet.
Is this the same membrane that comes in the AKW tanking kits?
Yes. AKW and Mapei wet room kits use Mapegum WPS as the waterproofing layer, so these drums are ideal for topping up a kit.
How many coats do I need?
Two coats are normally applied, the second once the first is touch dry (usually 1–2 hours).
