Mapei Mapelastic AquaDefense is a fast-drying, ready-to-use liquid waterproofing membrane, supplied by AKW for tanking wet rooms, showers and other wet areas. It is a flexible, one-component product: open the tub, stir and apply – there is no powder to mix. Its big advantage is speed: you can tile over it in around 4 hours, so a wet room can often be tanked and tiled on the same day.

Choose the complete AKW tanking kit (21323), which includes a 7.5kg tub of Mapelastic AquaDefense, a 5m roll of Mapeband PE120 tape and Mapei primer, or buy the 7.5kg tub (21321) on its own to top up a kit or tank a bigger room.

AquaDefense is designed to work with AKW wet floor formers and wastes, sealing the floor and walls before tiling. It suits floors built on an AKW Tuff Form, Tuff Form8 or Contour ShowerDec former.

Kit or tub – which should I buy?

If you are tanking a wet room from scratch, the kit is the simplest option: it gives you the membrane, the tape for the wall-to-floor joints and the primer for absorbent surfaces in one box. Add Mapeband corners and gaskets for corners, pipes and the waste outlet.

Buy the tub on its own when you already have tape and primer, when you need extra membrane for a larger room, or when you want a second coat on a big area. Measure the floor plus the wall area you plan to tank and allow for two coats.

Installation notes

Prime absorbent surfaces, bed the Mapeband tape into the first coat at all joints and corners, then apply a second coat. Allow around 4 hours before tiling. Always follow Mapei’s instructions on the tub for thickness, temperature and curing.
