AKW Mullen Level Access Shower Tray – Choice of Size, Handing & Waste

AKW Mullen Level Access Shower Tray – Choice of Size, Handing & Waste

The AKW Mullen is a genuinely level-access shower tray that needs only a 27mm floor recess. It gives a clearly defined, step-free showering area that is easy to roll a wheelchair or shower chair onto and easy to see — without the cost and disruption of a full wet room. Made from compressed GRP with a slip-resistant textured surface, it carries AKW's lifetime guarantee.

Choose from 8 sizes between 1000 x 1000mm and 1800 x 820mm, left or right handed, supplied as a tray only or with a gravity waste.

Key features & benefits

• Level access from a 27mm recess — or surface-mount it with a ramp kit where the floor can't be recessed.
• Intergrip® clamping strip grips and seals safety vinyl flooring into the tray for an exceptionally watertight joint. The flooring can go down after the tray and screen are fitted.
• 25mm internal fall to a corner waste for fast drainage — the corner position also helps you avoid floor joists.
• Compressed GRP construction — strong and stable, with no under-tray foaming needed.
• Supports 190kg (30 stone) and is suitable for the point loads of a shower seat or chair.
• Built-in tiling upstands on two or three sides complete the water seal against tiled or panelled walls.
• Ribbed underside stops the tray slipping or floating during installation, and pre-formed fixing holes speed up fitting.
• 1800mm alcove trays are cut-to-length — up to 275mm can be trimmed from each end, and they are supplied with left and right stop ends.
• Suitable for timber, concrete and screeded floors. UKCA and CE marked.

Choosing the right Mullen tray

Corner or alcove? The 1000 x 1000mm square tray and the handed rectangular trays (1200, 1300 and 1420mm) are corner trays. The two 1800mm trays are non-handed alcove trays that you cut down to fit any alcove from 1250mm to 1800mm long.

Left or right hand? Stand outside the shower, looking in. The hand is the side the waste sits on. If your soil pipe or joists are on the left, choose a left-hand tray.

How to measure: measure the finished wall-to-wall width and depth of the shower area in at least two places and work from the smallest figure. Allow for wall boards or tiles if they are not yet fitted.

Tray only or with waste? "With Gravity Waste" includes an AKW gravity waste matched to the tray. Choose "Tray Only" if you are fitting a pumped waste (for example with an AKW DigiPump) or already have a compatible waste. Not sure? Call us on 0333 772 4162 and we will help you pick.

Installation notes

• For full level access on an 18mm timber floor, ply up the surrounding floor to meet the tray — plywood packs are not included.
• For a tiled floor instead of safety vinyl, you will need the Mullen Universal Floor Tiling Kit (26259).
• To fit a 1300 x 820mm tray in an alcove, add the matching Mullen 820mm alcove adaptor kit.
• Waste depth below the tray depends on the waste chosen — check this against your joist or screed depth before ordering.

Where the Mullen is used

Accessible and Doc M bathrooms, disabled adaptations for local authorities and housing associations, care homes and assisted living, and any home where a step-free shower is wanted without building a full wet room. The defined tray edge is clearly visible.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Mullen truly level access? Yes. Recessed 27mm into the floor, the tray sits flush with the finished floor so there is no step at all.

Can I fit it without recessing the floor? Yes, it can be surface mounted, with a ramp to bridge the height for wheelchair users.

Do I need to foam under it? No. The compressed GRP tray does not need under-tray foaming.

Can it be cut? Only the 1800mm alcove trays, which can be trimmed by up to 275mm at each end. The corner trays must not be cut.

Can I tile the floor up to it? Yes, with the Universal Floor Tiling Kit (26259). As standard it is designed to take safety vinyl flooring.
