AKW SmartCare Lever Thermostatic Electric Care Shower – Choice of kW & Kit
The AKW SmartCare Lever electric care shower is a thermostatic electric shower built around one large, easy-to-grip lever. It is designed for accessible bathrooms and care settings, and for the carers and installers who specify them. One movement of the lever turns the shower on and sets the temperature, and the shower confirms every change with an audible click and a bright digital temperature read-out.
Choose an 8.5kW or 9.5kW rating to suit your electrical supply, then pick the shower kit you need: the white Care Kit (with a white, dark blue or mid grey riser rail), the Chrome Care Kit, or the Standard Silver & White Kit. Every SmartCare Lever is BEAB Care certified, RNIB tried and tested, and DSDC accredited.
Key features & benefits
- Single lever control – a soft-touch mid grey insert gives a secure, easy grip.
- Tactile, high-contrast markings – raised letters, a power symbol and a pointer on the lever, with raised dots at the coolest and hottest settings.
- Audible clicks and an LED temperature display – clear feedback for every user.
- Matt, anti-glare control panel – reduces distracting reflections.
- Thermostatically stabilised temperature with a thermal cut-out that protects the unit if the water reaches its maximum temperature.
- Phased shutdown – flushes the heater on switch-off for a safe, comfortable start next time.
- Automatic shut-off after 5, 10, 20 or 30 minutes, helping to prevent flooding and wasted water if the shower is left running.
- Eco setting – limits flow to 6 litres per minute as standard (the installer can override it).
- Rounded surfaces and edges for added safety.
- 5-year warranty as standard when registered with AKW within 30 days of installation.
Choosing your kit
Care Kit (white, dark blue or mid grey rail) – a 2m anti-kink hose, a 1m riser rail that is load-bearing to 150kg so it can be held for support, a shelf with non-handed hose retainers, a lever-operated sliding handset holder, an extra wall-mounted handset holder and a 3-mode shower head. The dark blue and mid grey rails stand out clearly against pale tiles, making the rail and handset easy to find.
Chrome Care Kit – the same care components finished in chrome for a more domestic look.
Standard Silver & White Kit – a lighter, everyday kit (2m anti-kink hose, trimmable 1m riser rail, hose retainer, adjustable handset holder, additional wall holder and 3-mode head) for homes where a load-bearing rail is not needed.
Already have a shower kit, or want to upgrade later? The AKW Care Accessory Kit and AKW Standard Accessory Kit are also sold separately, and we stock riser rail kit spare parts and the AKW Easy Clean Handset.
Choosing 8.5kW or 9.5kW
A higher kW rating gives a better flow at a comfortable temperature, especially in winter when the incoming mains water is colder. The rating you can fit depends on your supply cable and fuse: AKW specify a 35/40A protective device for 8.5kW and 40/45A for 9.5kW, with a 30mA RCD and a 50A double-pole isolating switch. If you are replacing an old shower, a qualified electrician should confirm which rating your circuit can safely carry.
Installation notes
- Retro-fit footprint covers the fixing holes of most other makers’ showers, so re-tiling is rarely needed; a stainless-steel fitting plate is supplied.
- 6 cable entry points and 8 water entry points (top, bottom, rear or side) plus a dual power block for left- or right-hand wiring.
- Can be wired, or connected wirelessly, to an AKW DigiPump waste pump or the AKW P12 shower waste pump for level-access wet rooms.
- Optional extras: SmartCare Remote On/Off Button (30316) for carers, and the AKW Halo Wall Plate to cover marks left by an old shower.
- Must be installed by a competent person to BS 7671 and current water regulations.

Frequently asked questions
Is the SmartCare Lever suitable for care settings?
Yes. The single lever, matt anti-glare panel, contrasting tactile markings and the option of dark blue or mid grey rails were designed for clear, simple use, and the shower holds DSDC accreditation.
Can the riser rail be used as a grab rail?
The rail supplied with the Care Kits (white, dark blue, mid grey and chrome) is load-bearing to 150kg. The rail in the Standard Silver & White Kit is a standard riser rail and should not be used for support.
Will it work with a pumped waste in a wet room?
Yes. It can be hardwired or connected wirelessly to an AKW DigiPump or P12 waste pump. If you need the pump too, see our SmartCare Lever packs with the M11 DigiPump.
Does it need a pump for low water pressure?
No pump is needed for the shower itself. It runs from mains cold water with a minimum running pressure of 0.5 bar (1 bar recommended for best performance).
