The AKW Standard Close Coupled Doc M Toilet Pack brings together everything you need to fit out an accessible toilet that follows Approved Document M: a raised-height, rimless Navlin close coupled toilet with a lever flush, a compact finger rinse wash basin, a lever mixer tap and a full set of grab rails, including a fold-up support rail. Because every part comes from AKW, the pieces are made to fit together and to sit in the positions shown on AKW's Doc M layout drawing.

Choose the grab rail colour and finish to suit your scheme – fluted uPVC rails in white, blue, dark blue or mid grey, or coated stainless steel rails in white, dark blue or mid grey – and choose between a standard monobloc spray mixer tap (AKW Doc M Pack 3) or a TMV3 thermostatic mixer tap (AKW Doc M Pack 5) for built-in scald protection.

Key features & benefits

• Raised-height rimless toilet – 480mm high with the seat fitted and a 750mm projection to make side transfer from a wheelchair easier. The rimless bowl has no hidden rim for germs to build up under and is quick to clean.
• Ergonomic toilet seat with lid – seat lugs stop the seat moving during transfer, and soft-close hinges lower it gently.
• Lever flush cistern – easy to use with a hand, a closed fist or an elbow, with a 3/6 litre dual flush setting and a screw-down lid that deters tampering in public washrooms.
• Finger rinse wash basin – 400mm wide with two tap holes (a blanking plug is supplied), small enough to reach from the toilet.
• Your choice of tap – a chrome monobloc spray mixer with a lever handle, or a TMV3 approved thermostatic mixer that limits the water temperature to help prevent scalding.
• Full grab rail set – four 600mm and one 450mm straight rails plus a fold-up support rail with an adjustable leg and optional toilet roll holder. Fluted uPVC rails give a secure grip even when wet and support up to 100kg (15.5 stone); coated stainless steel rails support up to 150kg (23.5 stone); the fold-up rail supports up to 200kg (30 stone).

Choosing your pack

Who is a Doc M pack for? Approved Document M of the Building Regulations sets out what an accessible toilet in a public or commercial building needs: a raised-height pan, a lever flush on the transfer side, grab rails in set positions, a hand rinse basin within reach of the toilet and contrasting fittings that are easy to see. Buying the parts as one AKW pack means everything is designed to work together and you are not left hunting for missing pieces on site. It suits offices, shops, schools, surgeries, hotels, care homes and community buildings.

Rail colour: Doc M asks for fittings that contrast with the walls around them, so they are easy to find. Blue, dark blue and mid grey rails stand out well on pale walls; white rails suit darker walls. Fluted uPVC rails are warm to the touch and very grippy; stainless rails give a more contemporary look and a higher weight rating.

Tap: where the water supply is not already blended, or in care settings, the TMV3 thermostatic tap is the safer choice. If the hot water is already controlled at a safe temperature, the standard spray mixer keeps the cost down.

Installation notes

• Fit the rails, shelf, hooks and basin at the heights shown on AKW's specification sheet – for example, the basin must not project more than 250mm from the wall, and the vertical rails by the basin sit 500–700mm apart.
• Fit the flush lever on the side of the cistern furthest from the wall, and the tap on the side of the basin nearest the toilet.
• Grab rails must be fixed to walls strong enough to take the load; use fixings suited to the wall construction.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Pack 3 and Pack 5?

They are the same pack apart from the tap. Pack 3 has a monobloc spray mixer tap; Pack 5 has a TMV3 approved thermostatic mixer tap that keeps the water at a safe temperature.

What does “Stainless” mean in the colour options?

The straight grab rails are coated stainless steel rather than fluted uPVC. They are stronger (150kg rating) and have a smoother, more modern look; the colour is the coating colour of the rails.

Is this pack fully compliant with Approved Document M?

The sanitaryware, rails and tap are designed to meet Doc M guidance when they are installed in the positions shown on AKW's specification sheet. Final compliance also depends on the room size, door and layout, so always follow the drawing and check with your building control officer.

Do I need to buy anything else?

You will need fixings suitable for your wall type, a waste and trap for the basin and your normal plumbing connections. Grab rails must be fitted to walls that can take the load.
