AKW tile backer board gives you a flat, stable, tile-ready surface for bathroom walls and floors. The 1200 x 600mm sheets are a manageable size to carry and cut, and come in three thicknesses – 6mm, 10mm and 12mm – so you can match the board to the job.

Fix the boards with AKW's tile backer washers and screws, then tile straight on – a cleaner, faster base than traditional plaster or cement board.

Which thickness should I choose?

As a general guide, 6mm board is used to overlay sound, flat walls or floors where height build-up must be kept to a minimum; 10mm is a good all-round wall board; and 12mm gives extra rigidity for stud walls and floors. Always follow the board and tile manufacturer's guidance for joist and stud spacing.

A tiling checklist. For a long-lasting tiled bathroom, start with a flat, sound base – tile backer board fixed with backer washers and screws is ideal on stud walls and where old plaster is poor. Fix ceramic wall tiles with a suitable adhesive such as Bond it Supergrip, keep joints even with tile spacers, and allow the adhesive to dry fully before grouting with Steri-Grout. Finish exposed edges with a tile trim and use a tile-to-vinyl transition strip where tiles meet safety flooring.

Installation notes

• Fix with tile backer washers and screws at the spacing recommended for your substrate.
• Tape and seal joints before tiling in wet areas.
• Use a flexible tile adhesive suited to backer board.
