Charcoal in a rustic matt glaze, on a 38x235mm ceramic finger tile. The surface is soft and chalky rather than flat black, with the aged, slightly uneven look of a handmade tile, so a dark wall has texture and life instead of a hard, uniform face.

Finger tiles like this are usually stacked vertically so the joints form thin lines up the wall, but they can run horizontally or be set in a herringbone. The matt charcoal suits a basin splashback, a shower wall or a kitchen upstand against pale worktops. Interior walls only.

Ceramic with a matt glaze is easy to keep clean and the dark tone does not show marks. The rustic finish is meant to vary between tiles. Fifty tiles come in each box and cover 0.45 square metres, so work out the boxes needed and add a margin.

Working out how many boxes

Measure the wall or floor in square metres, add 10% for cuts and breakages, divide by 0.45 and round up to the next whole box. Order everything you need in one go – shade can vary a little between production batches, and buying all your boxes together keeps the whole area from the same run.

Fitting notes

For walls, not floors. Use a flexible wall adhesive and a fine-notched trowel with a thin bed so adhesive stays out of the 1-2mm joints. Set out vertical lines before fixing. A charcoal or dark grey grout blends in; wipe grout off the matt face promptly, as it is harder to clean once dry.
