Charcoal rather than black, with the tight grain of Cardoso stone printed across each 70x280mm porcelain brick in a matt finish. Laid in a brick bond the wall takes on the look of dark split stone, and the small format means the grain changes from piece to piece.

This is the brick for a strong accent: a dark herringbone splashback, a shower niche, a plinth or a border round a pale floor. With 26 bricks to a box covering 0.52m², you can buy for a small area without waste. It also serves as a floor border or step riser.

Porcelain, rated for walls and floors, and suitable for indoor and outdoor use. The dark grey 450x900mm satin and anti-slip tiles in the Branford range match it for larger areas. It is a limited stock line, so order the whole quantity together.

Working out how many boxes

Measure the wall or floor in square metres, add 10% for cuts and breakages, divide by 0.52 and round up to the next whole box. Order everything you need in one go – shade can vary a little between production batches, and buying all your boxes together keeps the whole area from the same run.

Fitting notes

Use a cementitious adhesive and a fine-notched trowel, bedding each brick fully. A 2 to 3mm joint suits the format; a dark grout keeps the brickwork reading as stone, a light grout picks out the pattern. Use flexible adhesive and grout on floors and frost-resistant products outside.
