A warm terracotta-coloured porcelain with the soft tonal variation of fired clay, under a satin glaze that gives a low sheen without the shine of a gloss. The 406x406mm square is the classic size for a country kitchen floor, and the colour is the warm orange-brown of traditional quarry tiles.

Six tiles per box cover 0.99m². Lay it in a straight grid for a farmhouse look or on the diagonal for a more formal one; it runs across a kitchen floor, into a hallway and up a wall as a splashback in the same tile. It pairs with white brick wall tiles and natural wood.

Unlike real terracotta, this is glazed porcelain for indoor walls and floors: it does not need sealing, does not absorb spills and wipes clean with a mop. The tonal variation from tile to tile is part of the look, so lay from several boxes to spread it evenly.

Working out how many boxes

Measure the wall or floor in square metres, add 10% for cuts and breakages, divide by 0.99 and round up to the next whole box. Order everything you need in one go – shade can vary a little between production batches, and buying all your boxes together keeps the whole area from the same run.

Fitting notes

Fix with a flexible porcelain adhesive on a flat, sound base, solid-bedding each tile on floors. A 3 to 4mm joint with a sand or terracotta-toned grout suits the rustic look; a lighter grout makes each tile stand out. Blend tiles from all boxes as you lay.
