A Victorian geometric floor in ocean blue, supplied as 338x338mm sheets rather than loose pieces. Each sheet holds the small porcelain tiles of the pattern on a mesh backing, so the traditional design goes down one sheet at a time and the pattern repeats cleanly from sheet to sheet.

The blue is a deep sea blue set against the paler tones of the pattern, in a matt finish that suits a period hallway, a kitchen floor or a bathroom. Five sheets come in a box and cover 0.57m², so measure carefully and allow for cuts at the edges of the room.

Working out how many boxes

Measure the wall or floor in square metres, add 10% for cuts and breakages, divide by 0.57 and round up to the next whole box. Order everything you need in one go – shade can vary a little between production batches, and buying all your boxes together keeps the whole area from the same run.

Fitting notes

Dry-lay the sheets from the centre of the room to balance the cuts at the walls. Bed each sheet in a flexible cementitious adhesive with a fine-notched trowel, pressing the whole sheet flat so the small tiles sit level, and keep the joints between sheets the same as the joints within them. Grout with a flexible grout once set.
