The traditional basin waste: a brass plug on a ball chain, with a chrome grid over the outlet. No mechanism to go wrong, and by a distance the cheapest waste in the range.

It is the right choice for a period or traditional basin, for a utility or cloakroom where looks matter less, and for anyone who simply prefers a plug they can lift out and see.

This one is slotted

It is a slotted waste, so your basin needs an overflow hole — the small opening near the top of the bowl. Almost all pedestal and wall-hung basins have one. If yours does not (most countertop bowls), you need an unslotted waste such as the click basin waste unslotted.

Plug and chain, or a click waste?

A click waste is push-to-close and looks tidier — no chain, no plug sitting in the bowl. A plug and chain is cheaper, simpler and has nothing to fail. Neither is better; it depends whether you want the cleaner look or the simpler fitting.

Finish and looking after it

Polished chrome needs nothing more than a wipe with a soft damp cloth. Keep abrasive cleaners and strong limescale removers away from it — both cut through the plating.
