A dual fuel kit lets a towel rail that runs on your central heating also be heated by electricity. It is ideal in summer, when you don’t want to put the central heating on but still want warm, dry towels. The kit is colour coded in anthracite to match your towel rail, and the element comes ready fitted with a 1.5m cable (fly-lead).

This is the thermostatic version: the element has its own control so you can set how warm the towel rail gets, rather than it simply running flat out whenever it is switched on. For a lower-cost option there is also a standard (non-thermostatic) element in the same finish.

How dual fuel works

The towel rail stays connected to your central heating and full of water as normal. The kit fits at the bottom of one leg of the towel rail with a T-piece: the heating pipe connects to one side of the T and the electric element screws in so that it sits up inside the leg of the rail. When the central heating is on, the rail heats as usual; when it’s off, switch on the element and it warms the water already in the rail.

Choosing the right wattage

The element’s wattage should suit the size of your towel rail. As a rule of thumb, pick an element no more powerful than the towel rail’s own heat output in watts (you’ll find this on the rail’s product page or data sheet) – the nearest size below is usually right. A small element in a big rail will take a long time to warm up; an element that is too big for the rail is wasted power. Choose 300W or 600W from the dropdown.

Fitting

Dual fuel is for towel rails that are connected to a central heating system and full of water – it is not for electric-only towel rails, which come with their own sealed element. Fixings are supplied. Fitting involves both plumbing and electrics, and electrical work in a bathroom must follow the UK wiring regulations, which set out where electrical equipment can go in relation to the bath and shower, so we recommend a qualified electrician and plumber.
