The Kartell K-VIT Kolt range pairs a squared-off body with softly rounded edges. This is the hi-rise mono basin mixer in polished chrome — a taller version of the standard Kolt basin mixer, with the spout raised well clear of the basin.

When you need a hi-rise

A standard basin mixer sits low, which is right for a basin with the tap hole in its rim. But if you have a countertop or vessel basin — a bowl sitting on top of a worktop or vanity unit — a standard tap will be too short and the spout will sit at or below the rim of the bowl.

A hi-rise gives you height to get your hands underneath comfortably. Before choosing, measure the height of your bowl from the worktop, and check the spout will reach far enough over to land water near the middle rather than the edge.

Worth knowing: a taller spout means a longer drop, so splashing is more likely in a shallow bowl. If your basin is a shallow dish rather than a deep bowl, that's worth factoring in.

Water pressure

Kolt needs only 0.2 bar, which is low even by low-pressure standards — so it works on gravity-fed plumbing as well as mains pressure.

Living with it

The ceramic disc cartridge with quarter-turn operation gives full flow from a small movement and is far less prone to dripping than a washer tap. Polished chrome hides water spotting better than the matt and brushed finishes and needs only a wipe with a soft cloth.

Kolt is made in polished chrome, matt black, brushed brass and brushed nickel. If your basin has a rim tap hole rather than being a countertop bowl, the standard Kolt mono basin mixer is the one you want — and it includes a waste, which this one doesn't.
