Metro is a straight ladder towel rail from Kartell made entirely from grade 304 stainless steel, polished to a bright, mirror-like finish. It has two 30mm square uprights and slim 19mm round rails – 12 rails on the 800mm sizes and 18 on the 1200mm – arranged in groups with gaps between them where folded towels can hang.

Because it is solid stainless steel rather than plated mild steel, there is no coating to chip or peel, and stainless steel resists rust and corrosion in a damp bathroom. That is reflected in Kartell's 10 year guarantee – double the five years on most of their towel rails.

It comes in four sizes: 800mm or 1200mm high, each in 500mm or 600mm widths. Choose your size from the dropdown.

Sizes and heat output

Choosing a size

The 800mm heights suit a cloakroom, en-suite or a short wall; the 1200mm heights give more hanging space and around half as much heat again. Going from 500mm to 600mm wide adds a little more heat and space for wider bath towels.

Slim stainless steel rails give out less heat than a chunky steel radiator of the same size, so Metro is best thought of as a towel warmer that takes the chill off the room. If it needs to heat the bathroom on its own, check its output against a BTU calculator for the room. Kartell quote the output at Δt60, a standard test temperature; many modern boilers, and especially heat pumps, run cooler than that, so the heat you actually get may be lower.

Fitting

Metro is supplied with everything needed to fix it to the wall, and is pressure tested up to 7.8 bar. Valves are sold separately – see our towel radiator valves; chrome valves suit the polished finish.

The pipe connections are at the bottom of each upright: 470mm apart on the 500mm wide sizes and 570mm apart on the 600mm wide sizes (the “tapping centres”). If you are replacing an existing towel rail, measure between your pipes first – if it does not match, the pipework will need adjusting.

Metro stands 110mm out from the wall, and the pipe connections are 95mm out from the wall, at the centre of each upright.

Looking after the finish

Wipe over with a soft, damp cloth and dry to avoid water marks. Avoid abrasive pads, wire wool and bleach-based cleaners, which can scratch or dull polished stainless steel.
