A bottle trap is the trap you fit when it will be seen. It does the same job as the plastic U-bend hidden inside a vanity unit — holding a plug of water that stops drain smells coming back up — but in polished chrome, and shaped to look like it belongs there.

Where you need one

Under a wall-hung basin, a countertop bowl on an open washstand, or a semi-pedestal basin — anywhere the pipework below the basin is on show. A white plastic trap under a nice basin undoes the basin.

The extension tube is the horizontal pipe running back to the wall. It is included, and it cuts to length on site, so the trap works whatever the distance from basin to wall — the measurement that varies most and is hardest to predict before fitting.

This is the square version — an angular body and squared extension tube, for a bathroom with square basins and square brassware. Round pipework under a square basin is the sort of mismatch that is hard to unsee.

It is the most expensive of the three traps, which is the usual premium for a squared casting over a turned round one.

The round alternatives are the round bottom bottle trap and the slimmer minimalist bottle trap.

Finish and looking after it

Polished chrome needs nothing more than a wipe with a soft damp cloth. Keep abrasive cleaners and strong limescale removers away from it — both cut through the plating.
