Why matt black, honestly

Against a white basin, black brassware reads as a deliberate design choice rather than something that blends in. It's the finish to pick if you want the taps to be part of the scheme, and it pairs naturally with black shower valves, black wastes and black-framed screens.

The trade-off is real and worth knowing before you buy. Matt black shows limescale and water spotting far more than chrome, particularly in a hard water area — white marks stand out against a dark surface where they'd disappear on a shiny one. It wants wiping dry after use to look its best. If nobody in the house will do that, chrome is the easier life.

Never use abrasive cleaners or limescale remover on matt black. The finish is a coating, not plating, and harsh chemicals will dull or strip it. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth is the whole routine.

Will it work with my water pressure?

Yes, and better than most. Kolt needs only 0.2 bar — low even by low-pressure standards — so it works on gravity-fed plumbing in older properties as well as on mains pressure.

Living with it

The ceramic disc cartridge with quarter-turn operation means full flow from a small movement of the lever, and far less chance of a drip than a washer tap.
