Black porcelain with a polished finish in a 600x600mm square. The gloss gives the black a deep, reflective surface, so a floor looks almost like dark glass. It makes a bold base for a bathroom or a kitchen with white units.

Three tiles make a box and cover 1.08m². The large square needs few joints, and the rectified edge allows 2-3mm with a black grout so nothing breaks up the colour. Lay it in a straight grid. Polished black on a floor shows dust, so it suits a bathroom or a formal room more than a back hall.

Full-bodied porcelain stoneware, black through the body, so edges and cuts match. The manufacturer rates it for walls and floors in bathrooms, kitchens, conservatories, hallways and living areas, from homes to commercial projects. Chips and cut edges stay black rather than showing a pale biscuit, which matters on an exposed step or edge.

Working out how many boxes

Measure the wall or floor in square metres, add 10% for cuts and breakages, divide by 1.08 and round up to the next whole box. Order everything you need in one go – shade can vary a little between production batches, and buying all your boxes together keeps the whole area from the same run.

Fitting notes

Polished black shows every scratch, smear and ridge, so prepare a flat base, use a levelling system and keep the face spotless during fitting. Bed fully on a flexible porcelain adhesive. Use a black grout at 2-3mm and wash it off before it dries on the surface.
