Description

The Kartell K-VIT Unity anti-slip rectangular shower tray is the same British-made stone resin tray as the standard Unity rectangle, but with a textured surface moulded into the tray floor that gives it a Class C slip rating to DIN 51097 — the highest of the three barefoot-wet classifications, and the one specified for shared and commercial changing areas. Like the standard range it sits just 45mm off the floor, so you get the safer surface without giving up the low, near level-access step.

Who it's for

Class C matters most where a fall would be serious or where the shower gets heavy use: bathrooms adapted for an elderly or less mobile user, wet rooms in care and supported housing, holiday lets and student accommodation, gyms and clubhouses. It's also worth considering in a family bathroom — a wet stone resin tray is slippery, and the texture costs far less than the consequences of someone going over.

The surface is textured rather than coated, so it can't wear off or peel the way an applied anti-slip finish eventually does. It does hold onto soap scum a little more than a smooth tray, so it wants a regular wipe with a non-abrasive cleaner rather than being left to build up.

What it's made of

Moulded from acrylic-capped stone resin and double skinned. The stone resin core is what gives the tray its rigidity — it won't creak or flex underfoot the way a thin acrylic tray can — while the ABS acrylic cap gives a hard, non-porous surface. Made in Britain and covered by Kartell's 25 year guarantee.

Choosing your size

Measure the alcove at floor level, and measure at both ends — older walls are rarely parallel, and it's the narrowest point the tray has to pass. If you're taking out a standard 1700mm bath, the 1700mm trays drop straight into the same run. The 760mm depths exist to replace older imperial-sized trays, so if you're refitting rather than starting fresh it's worth checking whether 760 fits better than 800.

You'll need a waste

Unity trays are supplied without a waste, and an ordinary shower waste will not fit — the outlet takes a 90mm fast flow waste. Add one from the dropdown above in chrome (FFW90), matt black, brushed brass or white, or choose "Without a waste" if you're reusing one. Fast drainage is worth having on any low tray, and more so on the longer sizes where a slow waste shows up as water standing at one end.

Fitting it

On a solid floor the trap needs to sit below floor level, so the pipework usually has to be chased in. Where that isn't practical — a timber floor, an upstairs bathroom, or a concrete slab you'd rather not cut — a Unity riser kit lifts the tray onto a 90mm plinth and hides the pipework behind a matching gloss white front panel:

The legs adjust between 90 and 120mm; going above 90mm means sourcing a taller plinth. Riser kits carry a 1 year guarantee rather than the 25 years on the tray.

Bear in mind that raising the tray reintroduces a step, which rather works against the point if you've chosen anti-slip for accessibility reasons. Where step-free access is the priority, it's worth the extra work to drop the waste below the floor.

These are heavy — an 1100 x 800mm tray is around 30kg — so treat them as a two-person lift.
